This site is dedicated to Practice, Music and Self-understanding
Please click on a link above to find out more.

Feel free to contact me for any questions.
Sound Direction stands for Art, Health, Awareness and Purpose.

You can hear a selection of my music using the player located to the left on this page.

What is this?
This is a practice in self-understanding and accepting what is, with the help from another person.

My first priority is to give you an opportunity to understand yourself. I believe no one can do it better than you, but you need an intelligent mirror that reflects back to you so that you can see through your own, your friends’ and society’s projections. When we try to work on our own, we very easily get distracted. I help you stay on course. See me as a mirror, an objective experiencer that provides you with a bigger picture than just your own perspective. The point is to see the truth, not the judgements.

I am not a doctor or expert of any kind. I do not offer solutions and new plans. This is neither therapy nor psychoanalysis. You might have some success and understanding in various areas such as spirituality, relationships, work-issues or life purpose because of this work. The point is still self-awareness. To relax and feel welcomed in what is.

How does this work?
We meet and you tell me what is happening to you, whatever is on your mind. I can answering questions you might have but the exploring is mostly led by you. I help you stay on course. I remind you of yourself. I listen to you with my full attention, letting you be who you are.

Everything is strictly confidential. (I might consult my own teachers on rare occasions for a wider perspective but I will never give any information that can lead to you.)

Why do I do this?
I do this because it interests me deeply and I think it is a part we miss in our society. My own experience is that it is quite hard to find people who are willing to see you as you are and so we dare less to be ourselves. More and more people ask me to do this and it is also a practice for me and a service to the community.

Experience:

  • I have had a spiritual practice for over 10 years and continue to do so.
  • I studied at Naropa University in Boulder CO, USA for 4 years (a Buddhist Contemplative University)
  • I practice Meditation, Tai Chi Chuan and Integral Life Practice.
  • I have studied the voice method of Roy Hart Theatre and lived with the community in France for a year.
  • I am student of the Ridhwan School. (Diamond Approach)
  • I am a part of an international men’s group.
  • I am the founder and leader of an on-going Men´s group in Barcelona.
  • I have experience in Yoga, Pilates and BMC.
  • I have experience and knowledge of Enneagram, Ayur Veda, sexuality, relationships and nutrition.
  • I have studied music and arts all my life.

Some of my influences:
A.H. Almaas, David Deida, Ken Wilber, Gabriel Cousins, Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, Deepak Chopra, Stephen Levine, Anthony Robbins and my mentor Eva Skoglund.

Important: I do not represent any of these schools, ideas or methods in any way. Nor am I trying to imitate their work. But I believe that anyone who is interested in a spiritual practice should get to know about other works on an on-going basis and also have a community for support and learning. I consider this a vital part of my own practice.

Contact me:
Send me an email where you describe yourself, your background and what is currently on your mind. This is for me to get to know you a little better and to see if we can work. All information is strictly confidential. Also feel free to ask me more.

Men’s Group Purpose:
This group is open for ALL MEN no matter what sexual orientation, political views, ethnicity or religious background.

Background
Many of us have lost contact with our male community like fathers, brothers and trusted friends. Even though society can appear “too masculine”, a kind of money, “go-getter” win or lose – world, there is also a newer prevailing view that masculine is bad, macho, violent and out of touch. More and more men feel lonely, confused and under-valued, and unsure of their identity. Most men have a belief that “a man should take care of his own problems alone”, but at the same time, most men secretly feel this is a burden. I believe that there are many unexplored masculine sides, much deeper than the stereotype that has been bad-mouthed so much for the last 30 years. Even though we have advanced as a culture, I also think it is true that many men are very confused about their roles and how to behave, and at times even feel guilty for their gifts and desires. I am not talking about going back to old abusive ways, but to continue forward and integrate and evolve what we are, without condemning parts of ourselves. When we try to hide what we are, we become more neurotic and stuck, and this can cause us to lash out unconsciously when our desires go unfulfilled. Often these damaging habits do not serve us or those around us. By understanding and accepting what we are, we will gain more purpose in life, and gain strength and love for ourselves, those around us, and for the whole world. Realizing who we are is a gift for the world, as is everybody else, and with this realization comes a feeling of freedom.
Many of us have a feeling of “having to spend time” with our partners instead of being there fully. By having a deeper purpose in life, you align everything you do to it, and so you do what you want to do whole-heartedly, all the time. Spending time with other men, will greatly improve your interest in your family and partner, and it can be a great way to discover more of whom and what you are.
Samuel Törnqvist

This is a practice group for men who wish to learn from other men’s wisdom and develop their own depth. This is a self-awareness/self-realization group. We work with questions like:

The meetings (on-going)
We meet every other week and for a maximum of two hours, during which members talk about what they are going through, and anything they would like help and advice with.
A member can choose to receive advice or not. Sometimes to be heard is all there is to it. Still, this group is more about how you can gain freedom in your life, and what you can do about your situation, rather than just emoting, even though that of course is an essential aspect as well.
If a member chooses to, we can suggest to him a task to fulfill that will aid him to deal with the present challenge.
There also might be simple practices and exercises to make us more present and focused, or to learn something new. It is helpful, but not essential, if you have some meditation experience.

It is not easy to look at oneself. If several men agree about you they are probably right.

What is this?
This is the voice-work developed (continuosly being devloped) by Samuel Törnqvist.

Hello!
I will help you find your own voice. You will learn how to give new life to your expression. I will help you appreciate the voice you already have, but perhaps have forgotten.

Voice is any sound you can do, not just “beautiful idealized singing”, even though that is also a part of your voice.
What different sounds can you make? How low and high can you sing? What different kinds of voices can you do? What is a beautiful and an ugly voice? Is there a difference?
Why always stick to labels like alto, soprano, tenor and bass – maybe we can do more than that? Let’s find out.

Creativity is the same as creation. It cannot be forced. If we only reach for one specific ideal, one way to create, we close all doors for ourselves. Possibilities will only reach to an open mind.

What I teach?
We work with you as you are. This is about finding out who you are through your voice.
But we can also work with texts and/or songs as a way to explore and/or learn standard technique. Again, the point is to find your particular voice, not to sound like someone else. We work with your voice in different areas of your body, using the help of physical movement and exercises. We find out where your voice is "not free".

We often work with intention. Most standard voice training teaches you how to sing in a specific way, in order to present a direction or emotion. That is ok too, but here, we kind of do the opposite, using intention and emotion to power your voice.

Whom do I teach?
I work with ALL levels. In groups and in private. If you have never sung before or if you are a professional. The important thing is that you are ready and present in class.

If you have experience, we deepen your knowledge and find more ways to express yourself.
If you have "no experience", we will explore all the infinite possibilities. Sometimes, an “expert” tends to have fewer options, while a “beginner” is open to more possibilities.

I work with actors, musicians, speakers or anyone who wants to further explore their voice.

Preparations for class
You will need to bring a text you are currently working on, or you can choose something you enjoy. It can be poems, songs, plays etc. You should know the text/song by heart and please chose a monologue if you work with a play.
This workshop/class  is in English. You don’t need to speak perfect English. You just need an open heart and a willingness to learn. I also speak Catalan.

What people say about this work:

- I really gained from Samuel´s body and soul approch to vocal training. Apart from releasing vocal potencial in terms of range, song interpretation and tone, I discovered something more important and that is to feel my voice rather than think it, which has lead to me finding a more original and honest- sounding voice
HILARY JAMES
